Yukoners gather at the 2024 Housing Summit

This is a joint news release between the Government of Yukon and the City of Whitehorse.

On Thursday, February 29, the Government of Yukon and the City of Whitehorse invited Yukoners to participate in the 2024 Housing Summit at the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre in Whitehorse.

The focus of the 2024 Housing Summit: Building Homes: Innovative Solutions for Stronger Communities was on exploring innovative solutions, sharing success stories and working collaboratively toward building a stronger future for our territory. The summit continues the dialogue initiated in previous housing summits, while also addressing discussions revolving around the current housing situation in the Yukon.

Key highlights of the summit included:

Presentations by guest speakers: Small Housing BC, Hey Neighbour!, Collective and Happy Cities sharing fresh innovative approaches to the housing challenges we face.
Speaking series by local First Nations organizations and community organizations offering a community context to the housing challenge.
A Solutions Café that gave participants the chance to dive into interactive conversations covering a range of topics from land supply to affordability.

The summit was not only about listening but actively participating in the solution-building process. Attendees had the opportunity to contribute to ongoing efforts to tackle the Yukon’s housing challenges.

A report of what we heard at the 2024 Housing Summit will be published in the coming months.

The Housing Summit continues to be an important platform to reconnect with community partners across the territory and find concrete solutions to the housing and homelessness challenges we face in the Yukon. This year the Housing Summit provided a venue to continue the discussions about housing affordability and attainability, and to explore how we can maintain momentum and address housing needs in the territory.

Minister responsible for the Yukon Housing Corporation Ranj Pillai

I am pleased to have participated in the Whitehorse Housing Summit alongside community advocates, experts, and leaders who understand the housing needs in our city. These discussions, ideas, and solutions will help us make the best decisions possible when it comes to offering housing options for all.
