Alaska Highway West local area planning

The Government of Yukon and Champagne and Aishihik First Nations have commenced a cooperative local area planning process for an area along the Alaska Highway from Ibex Valley towards Haines Junction. The plan will be developed with the assistance of an advisory Committee made up of area residents and First Nation citizens.

What is local area planning

Local area plans guide the development and use of land in unincorporated Yukon communities. The plans designate areas for specific land uses. Learn more about local area planning.

The planning area

The planning area is along the Alaska Highway. The area extends from Ibex Valley to Haines Junction.

Latest Updates

In the spring of 2025, the governments of Yukon and Champagne and Aishihik First Nations asked Yukoners to share their opinions to help inform the plan's visions and values. A variety of engagement activities took place to reach the advisory Committee's target audiences: CAFN citizens; area residents; public; and organizations with direct or indirect interests in the area. The survey period has now ended, and the What We Heard Report, which provides a summary of recent engagements, is available below. The next step in the process is to procure a planning consultant team to develop a public engagement and planning process that will deliver:

  • draft land use concepts;
  • a draft plan;
  • an engagement summary report; and
  • a final plan.
