Apply for a dental hygienist or therapist licence

  1. Determine if you're eligible

    All dental hygienists and dental therapists practising in Yukon must register and hold a current Yukon licence.

    We accept new applications on an ongoing basis. You only need to apply for registration once. But you must renew your licence every year. All dental hygienist and therapist licences expire annually on March 31.

    We may not approve you for registration or licensing if you've had any complaints, disciplinary or criminal action against you.

    Eligibility

    Dental hygienists

    You're eligible to register and apply for this licence if you meet 1 of the following sets of requirements.

    You have:

    • graduated from an accredited dental hygiene program; and
    • earned a certificate of qualification from the National Dental Hygiene Certification Board of Canada (NDHCB). This certificate must be dated no more than 2 years before this application.

    Or you:

    • hold a valid dental hygienist licence in another Canadian jurisdiction; and
    • are in good standing in that jurisdiction.

    Dental therapists

    You're eligible to register and apply for this licence if you meet the following requirements.

    • You hold a valid dental therapist licence in another Canadian jurisdiction; and
    • you're in good standing in that jurisdiction.

     

  2. Complete the application form

    Complete all sections of the application form. Do not leave a section blank. You may enter "not applicable" when it's relevant.

    Make sure to mark on the top of the form if you're applying for a dental hygienist or dental therapist licence.

    We may return incomplete applications.

  3. Provide all other required supporting documents

    Dental hygienists

    Gather together the following documents and provide them with your complete application.

    Current photo ID

    • Provide 1 copy of a piece of photo ID.
    • The ID must be issued by a territorial, provincial or federal government body.
    • The ID must show your current legal name.
    • We do not accept a healthcare card as a form of ID.

    Certificate(s) of standing

    We only require this from dental hygienists who are registered in another jurisdiction.

    • Request a certificate of standing from the regulatory body of each of the other jurisdictions you're registered in.
    • You must provide a certificate for each jurisdiction:
      • each certificate must be dated no more than 90 days before the date you submit your application; and
      • have each regulatory body send the certificate directly to Professional Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (PLRA).
    • We do not accept certificates of standing submitted by applicants.

    An official transcript

    We only require this from dental hygienists who are not registered in another Canadian jurisdiction.

    Certificate of qualification

     

    We only require this from dental hygienists who are not registered in another jurisdiction.

    • Provide 1 notarized copy of your certificate of qualification from the National Dental Hygiene Certification Board of Canada.
    • You must have a notary public validate the copy of the certificate.

    Dental therapists

    Gather together the following documents and provide them with your complete application.

    Current photo ID

    • Provide 1 copy of a piece of photo ID.
    • The ID must be issued by a territorial, provincial or federal government body.
    • The ID must show your current legal name.
    • We do not accept a healthcare card as a form of ID.

    Certificate(s) of standing

    We require this from all dental therapist applicants.

    • Request a certificate of standing from the regulatory body of each of the other jurisdictions you're registered in.
    • You must provide a certificate for each jurisdiction.
    • Have each regulatory body send the certificate directly to Professional Licensing and Regulatory Affairs.
    • We do not accept certificates of standing submitted by applicants.
  4. Pay your fees

    Fees

    Registration (1-time fee): $100.

    Annual licence fee: $50.

    Payment method

    You can pay your fees by cheque or credit card. Complete the payment information form and include this and your fees with your application.

  5. Submit your application, supporting documents and fees

    Submit your entire application package. This must include:

    • your completed application form;
    • all required supporting documents; and
    • your payment form and fees.

    We typically process applications within 10 business days. We will confirm you have met all legal requirements before issuing a licence. We may return your application if you have not provided all the required documentation.
