Apply for a funeral director licence

  1. Determine if you are eligible

    All funeral directors in Yukon must be registered and hold a valid licence.

    We accept new applications on an ongoing basis. But you must renew your licence every year. All funeral director licences expire annually on March 31.

    Eligibility

    You're eligible to apply for a licence if you meet 1 of the following sets of requirements.

    • You:
      • attended a recognized mortuary science school in a Canadian province for at least 2 full terms; and 
      • passed your program with an average of 60%.
    • You're eligible to practice as an embalmer and a funeral director in a Canadian province.

     

  2. Complete the application form

    Complete all sections of the application form. Do not leave a section blank. You may enter “not applicable” when it is relevant. We may return incomplete applications.

  3. Provide all required supporting documents

    Gather together the following documents and provide them with your complete application.

    Current photo ID

    • Provide 1 copy of a piece of photo ID.
    • The ID must be issued by a territorial, provincial or federal government body.
    • The ID must show your current legal name.
    • We do not accept a healthcare card as a form of ID.

    Certificate of standing

    • You must provide a certificate of standing if you're registered to practice in another Canadian jurisdiction.
    • Request the certificate from the regulatory body of that jurisdiction.
    • Have the regulatory body send the certificate directly to Professional Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (PLRA).
    • We do not accept certificates of standing submitted by applicants.

    Official transcript

    • You must provide a copy of your transcript from a recognized mortuary science school.
    • Ask the school to send the transcript directly to Professional Licensing and Regulatory Affairs.
    • We do not accept transcripts submitted by applicants.

    Proof of bonding

    • You only need to provide proof of bonding if you plan to offer prepaid or prearranged funerals.
    • The proof of bonding must be for at least $100,000.

    Proof of trust account

    • You only need to provide proof of trust if you plan to offer prepaid or prearranged funerals.
    • The trust account must be through a certified bank located in Yukon.
  4. Pay your fees

    Fees

    • Registration (1-time fee): $100.
    • Annual licence fee: $50.

     

    How to pay

    There are 3 ways to pay: by cheque, credit card or cash/debit.

    Cheque

    • Complete the payment information form.
    • Provide a cheque in the appropriate amount made out to Goverment of Yukon.
    • We will cash the cheque if we approve your licence.

    Credit card

    • Complete the payment information form.
    • If you submit your application in-person, by courier or mail, you may include your credit card info on your payment information form.
    • If you submit your application by email or fax, do not include your credit card info on your form. We will contact you for your credit card info.
    • We will take payment after we approve your licence.

    Cash/debit

  5. Submit your complete application

    Submit your complete application package. This must include:

    • your completed application form;
    • all supporting documents; and
    • your payment form.

    If sending by mail, courier or in-person, you may also include a cheque for your fees made out to "Government of Yukon." If you do not include a cheque, we will contact you regarding payment when we are ready to issue your licence.

    We typically process applications within 10 business days. We'll confirm you've met all legal requirements before issuing a licence. We may return your application if you have not provided all the required documentation.
