Update on the fire 40 km northwest of Watson Lake near Poison Lake

The fire burning 40 kilometres northwest of Watson Lake near Poison Lake grew yesterday. The fire is now an estimated 6,500 hectares. It is expected to continue moving northeast, away from Watson Lake. The fire has reached the Francis River, where it connects to the Liard River. Thirty firefighters, five helicopters and support staff are working to suppress the fire.

Smoke had increased in the Watson Lake area overnight but may dissipate throughout the day. Structural protection is being placed along the Robert Campbell Highway and sprinkler systems have been placed on structures in the area. The road is currently opened; however, a road closure is a possibility. The Evacuation Alert for kilometres 30 to 58 of the Robert Campbell Highway is still in effect. Watson Lake if not being impacted at this time.
