  1. Determine if you're eligible

All practical nurses in Yukon must hold a licence and renew it every year. Licences expire annually on January 31.

A full licence allows you to use the title of licensed practical nurse (LPN) and work to the full extent of Yukon regulations.

    Renewal period

Submit your renewal application before December 31. This ensures we can process your licence before it expires.

Applicants who have not renewed by March 31, must apply for reinstatement and pay all applicable fees.

It's illegal to work in the new licence year before we've processed your application.

    Eligibility

You're eligible to renew a full licence if you meet all the following requirements.

    • You hold a current full LPN licence for Yukon.
    • You've met all continuing competency requirements.
    • You complete steps 2 to 5 of this application process.
  2. Complete the renewal application form

Complete all sections of the renewal application form. Do not leave a section blank. If a section is not relevant, mark the section as “not applicable.”

At the top of the application form, choose full or a temporary full licence. Choose temporary full if you will practice in Yukon for less than a 3-month period in a licence year.

  3. Provide proof of continuing competency requirements

Read the continuing competency guide for full instructions, details and examples.

    Continuing competency requirements

To renew a full licence, you must meet the following continuing competency requirements.

    • Completion of at least 1,000 professional practice hours in the 4-year period immediately before your application.
    • Between 60 and 300 of these 1,000 hours must have involved continuing professional education.
    • No more than 300 of these 1,000 hours have involved professional volunteer service.

    Forms and documentation required

You must provide the following forms and documentation with your application. We may return applications that are missing required documentation.

    Verification of employment form

This form helps us validate your 1,000 plus professional practice hours. Complete this form with your employer. We require 1 form for each of your previous employers.

    Annual continuing education form

This form helps us validate your continuing education hours. Complete and submit 1 form per year you're claiming hours in.

    Continuing education supporting documents

Provide a supporting document for every continuing education activity listed on your annual continuing education form that is more than 4 hours.

    This documentation must include:

    • your name;
    • proof of the number of hours you completed; and
    • the date you completed the hours.

If you do not have a document with this information, then you may complete the verification of completed continuing education form with either the course provider/instructor or your supervisor.

You can also claim activities that are less than 4 hours, but these do not require supporting documentation.

    Verification of volunteer hours form

This form helps us validate your volunteer hours. Complete and submit this form with your volunteer organization. We require 1 form for each organization.

    Continuing competency exemption request

Submit this form if you are a new graduate or are new to Yukon and are unable to meet the continuing competency requirements. This form helps us assess the reason why an LPN licensed for less than 4 years did not meet the continuing competency requirements. We review exemption forms on a case-by-case basis and do not accept all exemption requests.

  4. Provide all other required supporting documents

You must also provide the following with your application.

    Verification of registration

Submit this form if you're registered to practice in another jurisdiction.

    • You must complete this form every year.
    • Complete the first section of the form.
    • Send the form to the appropriate regulatory body.
    • The regulatory body will return the fully completed form directly to us.
    • We do not accept forms submitted by applicants.

    Criminal record checks

    • You must have new criminal record and vulnerable sector checks done every 5 years.
    • Visit your local RCMP detachment or police to request these.
    • The RCMP or police must complete the checks no more than 90 days before you submit your application.
    • Ask the RCMP to:
      • send the results to your mailing address; or
      • make the results available for you to pick up.
    • Make sure to then submit the results with your complete application package.
  5. Pay your fees

    Fees

    • Annual full licence renewal fee: $200.
    • Annual temporary full licence fee: $50.
    • Late fee: $40 (for renewals processed between February 1 and March 31).

After March 31, applicants must apply for reinstatement and pay all applicable fees.

    How to pay

There are 3 ways to pay: by cheque, credit card or cash/debit.

    Cheque

    • Complete the payment information form.
    • Provide a cheque in the appropriate amount made out to Goverment of Yukon.
    • We will cash the cheque if we approve your licence.

    Credit card

    • Complete the payment information form.
    • If you submit your application in-person, by courier or mail, you may include your credit card info on your payment information form.
    • If you submit your application by email or fax, do not include your credit card info on your form. We will contact you for your credit card info.
    • We will take payment when ready to issue your licence.

    Cash/debit

  6. Submit your complete application package

Submit your entire renewal application package before December 31. This ensures we can process your certificate before it expires.

    The package must include:

    • your completed renewal application form;
    • all supporting documents; and
    • your payment form.

If sending by mail, courier or in-person, you may also include a cheque for your fees made out to "Government of Yukon." If you do not include a cheque, we will contact you regarding payment when we are ready to issue your licence.

It typically takes 30 business days to process a renewal application. We'llconfirm you've met all legal requirements before issuing a certificate. We may return your application if you have not provided all the required documentation.
