Participating in the IMPACT Program

What is IMPACT?

IMPACT is a remedial course for drivers to help improve their understanding of impaired driving. Drivers are referred by the Driver Control Board. The program, which stands for Information and Motivation for Positive Action and Choices Today, is for people with impaired driving referrals or those applying for the Ignition Interlock Program.

What is the purpose of the IMPACT program?

This program helps participants learn about:

  • understanding their personal relationships with alcohol or drugs;
  • how drugs or alcohol affect the body;
  • addictions and the difference between safe and risky use; and
  • resources to support healthy choices.

The goal is to prevent repeat offences and encourage safer driving habits.

How long is IMPACT?

IMPACT runs over 2 weeks with 4 2-hour sessions and a 20-minute exit session. You must attend all sessions to complete the program.

Is there a cost to take IMPACT?

This program is currently free to participants and is offered by Yukon University.

How do I take IMPACT?

Only people ordered by the Driver Control Board can join this program.

Do I have to take IMPACT if ordered?

The course is voluntary, but your licence will not be reinstated unless you complete it or successfully appeal to the Driver Control Board.

What should you expect when taking IMPACT?

The program includes 4 sessions that are each 2 hours long and runs over 2 weeks. The sessions cover:

  • introduction and personal assessments;
  • facts about drugs and alcohol;
  • safe vs. risky behaviours; and
  • making healthy lifestyle choices.

Once you’ve completed all 4 sessions, you’ll fill out an evaluation form. Then, contact the Driver Control Board coordinator to check if you need to take any other steps.
