  3. Register your child for Kindergarten

If your child will be 5 years old by December 31, 2024, they can start Kindergarten in the 2024-25 school year.

In the Yukon, Kindergarten is optional. Your child can start school in Grade 1 if you prefer. We recommend Kindergarten. It helps a lot with your child's early learning.

    Before you get started

Please note the following important information:

    • Registration for all Whitehorse-area schools must be done online. Registration opens on February 1, 2024.
    • Registration for rural community schools is done in person, at the school. You can do this at any time before the school year starts.
    • The deadline to register for French Immersion Kindergarten programs is February 18, 2024. (Offered only in Whitehorse at École Selkirk Elementary or École Whitehorse Elementary).
    • Your child must go to a school in your local neighbourhood or community. Click on the "Which school should your child attend?" link at the top of this page to find your attendance area. (Note: Catholic schools, French Immersion and French First-Language schools, and First Nation School Board schools have wider attendance areas.)
    • Please register only once per student.

Registering your child in a Whitehorse-area school

    Set up a Parent Account

Before you can register your child, you need to create a Parent Account in our student information system, called Aspen/MyEducationBC.

    Register your child

Registration opens on February 1, 2024.

The deadline to register for French Immersion Kindergarten programs is February 18, 2024.

You'll need to upload a digital copy of your child's ID (a birth certificate, passport, or Canadian citizenship certificate.) You can skip this step if needed and bring it to the school later.

    What's next?

    1. The school will review your registration.
    2. They'll confirm your child's place and give you more details.
    3. If your first-choice school is full, we'll help you find another option.

    Register for Catholic schools

You'll need to upload a Catholic schools of Whitehorse admission package when registering. You may also upload a Catholic baptismal certificate if applicable.

The school will contact you to arrange an interview.

    Register for French Immersion schools

The deadline to register for French Immersion Kindergarten programs is February 18, 2024.

Enrolment in French Immersion is decided through a lottery system, not on a first-come, first-served basis.

    • When registering, select École Selkirk Elementary or École Whitehorse Elementary.
    • If applying to École Selkirk Elementary, indicate that the registration is for French Immersion under the "submit" tab.

You'll hear back by February 22 and must confirm no later than 4pm, Thursday, February 29 .

    Register for French First-Language schools

To register your child in a French First-Language school visit la Commission Scolaire francophone du Yukon, or phone École Émilie-Tremblay at 867-667-8150.

Register for First Nation School Board schools

All Yukon students can enrol at First Nation School Board (FNSB) schools. To enrol in a rural community you can phone or visit the school.

    Registering in Whitehorse

Register your child following the instructions above.

Enrolment is not based on your residential address. Any student in Whitehorse can apply to:

    • Takhini Elementary; or
    • Grey Mountain Primary

If there's space, all students will be accepted and school buses are available for all students.

If space is limited, priorities are:

    1. Yukon First Nation students.
    2. Siblings of current students.
    3. Local students or other Indigenous students.

Registering your child in a rural community school

Visit your community school to register for kindergarten. You can do this at any time before the school year starts.

Most rural Yukon schools have 2 Kindergarten starting points. Your child can enter:

    • Early Kindergarten (K4) if they're 4 years old by December 31, 2024; or
    • Kindergarten (K5) if they're 5 years old by December 31, 2024.

Kindergarten program schedules can differ between schools. They may be half-day or full-day, and some schools include Kindergarten in blended-grade classrooms.

  4. Register your child for Grade 1 to 12

According to Section 22 of the Education Act, Yukon children must:

    • attend school from the age of 6 years plus 8 months (as of September 1) until at least the age of 16; except
    • by special arrangement with the Department of Education.
