Porcupine River Ice Advisory (last updated May 16, 2025, at 3 pm)
  • The Porcupine River is now under an Ice Advisory. An Ice Advisory means: river ice is changing or expected to change. Ice may melt, break or move; large pieces of ice may be flowing in the river. River levels can change very rapidly. Changing ice conditions may cause isolated flooding in low-lying areas. As breakup continues, the Ice Advisory may be upgraded to a Flood Watch or Flood Warning.
  • The Porcupine River is still covered with intact ice beyond the average breakup date from recent decades. The first warm weather arrives this weekend and will begin melting snow and ice, however a stronger ridge of high pressure is forecast to arrive next weekend and the ice cover may still hold considerable strength as water levels rise rapidly. There is an elevated probability of ice jamming under the current conditions. Currently, breakup is expected to occur after May 23.
  • To learn about preparing for floods, visit the VGFN Emergency Planning Team or Reception at the VGFN Administration Office, or visit www.PreparedYukon.ca.
  • Notify VGFN Reception or Emergency Management Team or RCMP (867-966-5555) if you see signs of flooding.
  • Read advisories on the Flood Hub, which also has daily updates to current water conditions.
  • The next update will be shared on this webpage and local channels including the VGFN Facebook page next week, or when conditions change.
