Support for arts and culture sectors

Funding announcements

The arts and culture sectors are of great importance to Yukon and Yukoners and we're working on initiatives to support them during the COVID-19 pandemic.

We'll post funding and program announcements to this page as information becomes available.

Touring Artist Fund

We have temporarily modified the eligibility criteria for the Touring Artist Fund. As of June 15, 2020, eligible projects include:

  • touring within Yukon; and
  • online (digital) "tours".

This change is meant to better support artists while travel and health restrictions are in place.

We expect this change to remain in place until we reach Phase IV of Yukon’s plan for lifting COVID-19 restrictions.

Cultural Industries Training Fund

We held an April 15 intake of the Cultural Industries Training Fund (CITF).

The CITF supports training for jobs that enable artists’ work to reach the public.

Due to COVID-19 guidelines established by Yukon's Chief Medical Officer of Health, training opportunities should be done by distance or online. Preference was given to training that allowed people to adapt to the current situation and present digitally.

Arts Fund

We increased the Arts Fund by $125,000.

There was a one-time special intake on April 20, 2020 for that amount.

The special intake criteria suspended the usual threshold and allowed applicants to apply for 100% of eligible project expenses. The regular June, September and December intakes for Arts Fund have not changed.

On Yukon Time – special funding

Tourism and Culture is providing special funding for arts-related initiatives in light of COVID-19 impacts.

We adapted our On Yukon Time program to support artists and organizations in this time of lost revenue and uncertainty. This is a one-time change for the 2020–21 fiscal year.

The next intake deadline is October 15.

The first intake for this funding was April 15. Successful applicants to the April 2020 intake are not eligible to apply in October.

Advanced Artist Award

For both the April 1, 2020 and the October 1, 2020 intakes of the Advanced Artist Award, $150,000 was available in funding. Normally, $75,000 is allocated for each intake.

This additional funding allowed more artists to use the downturn associated with COVID-19 to enhance their artistic professional development.

Information for recipients

We recognize the Yukon arts community faces many challenges due to the cancellation of events and programming changes related to COVID-19.

Here are some ways we're helping:

  • If you have an active Transfer Payment Agreement for project funding, and you have started the project but then find you must cancel or delay it due to COVID-19, you can claim the eligible expenses you have incurred up to the amount of your agreement.
  • Core funded organizations will not be required to have replacement programming for events or activities that are delayed, changed or cancelled due to the pandemic.
  • Core funded organizations should include an explanation of how the pandemic impacted their programming and activities when reporting.

Scientists and Explorers Licence

Anyone entering the Yukon for research purposes must obtain a Scientists and Explorers Act Licence.

While we're continuing to accept applications, there will be delays in the review and comments process. There is limited capacity at reviewing agencies and Yukon First Nations as a result of COVID-19 impacts.

We will not be issuing licenses until the Yukon Chief Medical Officer of Health advises that incoming travel can resume as normal.

If you have any questions or would like to discuss please email
