For many Yukoners, summer weekends are a time for touring the local garage sale circuit. The Chief Medical Officer of Health has advised that garage sales can proceed. Sellers and shoppers must practise the following guidelines.
6 steps to staying safe
-
Maintain physical distancing – keep 2 metres away from everyone who’s not a member of your bubble.
-
Wash your hands frequently with soap and water, or use hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.
-
Stay home if you’re feeling sick.
-
Don’t gather in groups of more than 10 people indoors or 50 outdoors, and remember to keep 2 metres (6 feet) apart.
-
Limit travel to rural communities, and be respectful when you’re there.
-
Self-isolate if you’ve:
- just returned to Yukon and have been outside of British Columbia, Nunavut or Northwest Territories in the last 14 days; or
- been in contact with someone diagnosed with COVID-19.
Guidelines for sellers
- Ensure buyers maintain a distance of 2 metres from others.
- Set up the sale outside, with sale items spread out to allow ample space for physical distancing.
- Clean items before set up. Do not sell items that are hard to disinfect.
- Sanitize surfaces on a regular basis during the sale.
- Wash your hands after each cash transaction, or wear gloves.
- Do not host a garage sale if you are feeling sick or unwell.
- A street or neighbourhood gathering is allowed as long as safe spacing is maintained and no more than 50 people are at an outdoor garage sale at a time. Ensure all participating garage sale operators are following this guidance.
Guidelines for buyers
- Maintain a distance of 2 metres from others while browsing sale items.
- Shop with your eyes and avoid touching items unless you make the decision to buy.
- Wash purchased items when you get them home.
- Wash or sanitize your hands after visiting each garage sale.
Additional information
- You are not required to complete an operational plan before your garage sale. You can do so if you choose but it will not be reviewed.
- Do not sell food items at your garage sale.
