The Government of Yukon is pleased to announce the acquisition of five new artworks into the Yukon Permanent Art Collection.
The new acquisitions are by artists Daniel Benjamin Gribben, Tamika Knutson, Dennis Shorty, Teresa Vander Meer-Chassé and Lorraine Wolfe. They cover a diverse range of art forms and styles, including carving, sculpture, beadwork and art jewellery. Blending traditional and contemporary techniques and themes, the works reflect each artist’s unique experiences.
The acquisitions were selected through the annual call for submissions process held by the territorial government and the Friends of Yukon Permanent Art Collection. The 2018 call focused on three-dimensional and relief works. The goal was to increase representation of those art forms in the collection, and to encourage wider participation from artists working in these media throughout Yukon communities.
A public exhibition of the new artworks will be held in Fall 2018.
Each piece in the Yukon Permanent Art Collection contributes to the rich story of visual art in our territory. When we are able to represent a broad range of art forms and artists, greater representation of Yukon’s diverse communities naturally follows. The collection is held in trust for all Yukoners and is truly an artistic Yukon treasure.

The Boreal Reverie Brooch was inspired by the vibrant colours and textures of the moss and lichen found in the North. Only through intuitive experimentation with metal forging and enamelling techniques was I able to achieve a shape and colour that could compete with the real thing. This brooch celebrates these lively intricate ecosystems by bringing their overlooked beauty into focus and onto the body. I'm so proud and excited to contribute my jewellery to such an impressive collection of art.

The new acquisitions were selected by the Friends of Yukon Permanent Art Collection (FOYPAC) through an arms-length adjudication process.
FOYPAC is a non-profit society made up of artists, art professionals and community members dedicated to the continued growth of the collection.
Works from the collection are displayed in public areas of Government of Yukon buildings in Whitehorse, Dawson, Faro, Haines Junction and Mayo. They are also periodically displayed in special curated exhibitions produced by Tourism and Culture’s Arts Section or through loans to other institutions.
There are currently over 435 art works by 226 artists in the collection.
