Over 40 seasonally-dependent projects tendered

The Government of Yukon is on track to deliver seasonally-dependent projects after releasing tenders worth over $66 million for the coming summer season before the end of March. An additional $19 million in projects will be tendered in April and May.

Putting out tenders before the summer allows contractors to begin work early and complete projects on schedule before winter. It also helps businesses plan and competitively bid for government contracts.

The government is also staggering closing dates to better enable contractors to be informed and have time to bid on more than one tender.

As part of our comprehensive work to improve procurement, we have been tendering projects earlier to help vendors better prepare for seasonal work. This approach allows contractors to plan their projects and take full advantage of our short and intense building season.

Minister of Highways and Public Works Richard Mostyn

Quick facts
  • Over 40 seasonally-dependent projects tendered for this summer include a wide variety of construction and maintenance activities such as resurfacing roads, soil and water monitoring programs, school painting and repairs, landscaping and grounds maintenance, and geotechnical drilling.

  • Last fiscal year projects worth more than $61 million were tendered before March 31, 2018.

  • In 2017–18 the Government of Yukon spent about $345 million through procurement including approximately $213 million which went to Yukon businesses.

  • The timing for releasing tenders takes into account factors such as project location, market availability and the ability of industry to meet government demand within the planned project schedules.
