Yukoners are asked to provide feedback on modernizing the Coroner’s Service. Through an online survey, citizens can describe what factors they believe should be considered in updating the Coroners Act, the legislation that guides the operations of the service.
Public responses will be considered before the drafting of new legislation. A new Act will be introduced during the fall 2018 session.
Comments will be accepted until August 24, 2018.
The Coroners Act needs amendments to be modernized as it has fallen behind when it comes to modern investigative processes and procedures. I look forward to hearing Yukoners’ views on how we can improve this legislation to reflect current best practices and ensure it is serving the public’s interest.
Public input into a new Coroners Act will ensure that our investigations meet the needs of grieving families and communities and help our Service remain impartial and efficient.

The existing Act, based on the Coroner’s Ordinance 1958, has only been amended a few times since that date.
-
Issues under consideration will include necessary qualifications for a chief coroner – who has authority to call inquests and who can preside over them.
