Reception centre for BC fire evacuees moving to new location

The Whitehorse reception centre for people displaced by wildfires in northern BC is being moved from its current location at Vanier Secondary School to a new location at 9010 Quartz Road. Its hours of operation are also being amended.

Reception and emergency social services support will be provided at the new location as of 11 a.m. on Wednesday, August 15. Operating hours are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday, until further notice. After hours and on weekends, on-call support can be accessed by calling 867-332-3179. Collect calls are accepted.

If required, the Whitehorse reception centre will continue to:

  • Coordinate non-medical survival needs.
  • Provide registration and inquiry services.
  • Coordinate lodging and supports.
  • Coordinate alternative shelter for domestic pets.
  • Care for people with special requirements in special care facilities.

Please note that the Whitehorse reception centre is not prepared to accept donations from the public at this time.

  • The new reception centre is located in the same building as Whitehorse Health Centre.

  • Emergency social services may include food, lodging, clothing, emotional support, information about the crisis, and family reunification. There may also be special services like psychosocial support, child minding and pet care.

  • This effort is coordinated by the Northwest Provincial Regional Emergency Operations Centre (NWPREOC) in Terrace, BC, in partnership with the Government of Yukon.
