Statement from Premier Sandy Silver on the passing of The Duke of Edinburgh

Premier Sandy Silver has issued the following statement:

“It is with deep sadness that I learned today of the passing of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

Prince Philip devoted his life to others. He served in the Royal Navy for 13 years, starting in 1939 as a Cadet. He continued to champion personal achievement and founded the Duke of Edinburgh Award.

This global program encourages young people to pursue worthwhile activities in the name of service to their communities in hopes of inspiring others to reach for their full potential.

Prince Philip also travelled to Yukon twice throughout his life. On his second trip in 1959, Prince Philip accompanied Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II where they toured Whitehorse and met Yukoners at the White Pass & Yukon Route railway station.

On behalf of all Yukoners, I extend our sympathies to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and all members of the Royal Family.”
