Statements about discussions between the Village of Haines Junction and Champagne and Aishihik First Nations

Minister of Community Services John Streicker, Champagne and Aishihik First Nations (CAFN) Dän nätthe äda Steve Smith and Haines Junction Mayor Michael Riseborough today released the following statements about discussions regarding possible changes to the municipal boundaries of Haines Junction:

I am delighted that the Village of Haines Junction and the Champagne and Aishihik First Nations are going to discuss the possibility of adjusting the village’s municipal boundaries. The change would incorporate an area that is very much a part of the community but outside the existing municipal boundary, streamlining processes and service delivery. We look forward to working together with our partners as they consider this change.

Minister of Community Services John Streicker

Champagne and Aishihik First Nations is happy to work together on options to expand the municipal boundaries of Haines Junction to include residents on CAFN land in the Dakwäkäda (Haines Junction) area. This aligns with our Council’s priorities of good governance and connecting, and solidifies our important relationship with our neighbours. This also opens the door for new collaboration and new ways to build up the community of Haines Junction. We are pretty excited to see this move forward.
