Three resident pediatricians based at the Klondyke Medical Clinic are now serving Yukon. In addition to their practice in Whitehorse, the pediatricians will spend two weeks per month providing services in Yukon’s rural communities, from September to November and January to June each year. The doctors will also liaise directly with all schools in Whitehorse to help support students with complex needs.
Having three resident pediatricians will allow the Government of Yukon to implement a social pediatric model of care. This model takes a holistic and multidisciplinary approach to child health and considers the health of the child within the context of their society, environment, school and family.
Adopting a social pediatrics model can help reduce health inequalities for children in rural communities, which is a priority for our government. Some parents have already told us that they are building trusting relationships with their new pediatrician and are receiving care that is more consistent. We will continue to work with our partners, including the Council of Yukon First Nations, to support increased access to child health services and supports.

Children and youth who are experiencing complex health needs are best served by comprehensive, coordinated care. By working collaboratively with family doctors, schools, counsellors and communities, pediatricians work with caregivers to optimize the health of children and youth. The expansion to three resident pediatricians will enable us to provide services in all Yukon communities, expand our outreach to schools and provide the hospital with on-call coverage 365 days a year for pediatric and neonatal emergencies.

Dr. Katharine Smart began working in Whitehorse in the fall of 2017. Dr. Sara Citron and Dr. Joe Oliver began working in the territory in October of this year.
Nunavut and the Northwest Territories have also adopted a three-pediatrician model.
