Update devices and calendars to Yukon Standard Time

Update devices and calendars to Yukon Standard Time

Yukoners are reminded that they do not need to turn their clocks back this weekend. Make sure devices are ready to show the new Yukon time by installing the latest updates to operating systems and other scheduling software.

As Yukon moves closer to transitioning into a new permanent time, the government has become aware of an issue with calendars, scheduling and appointments after November 1, 2020.

If a calendar item was created when a computer or phone was still recognizing Pacific Time, but was scheduled to occur on or after November 1, that item may think it should be on Pacific Standard Time (UTC-8). It will then translate to showing as an hour later than intended when the phone or computer is set to Yukon time (UTC-7). This problem is showing up in Outlook, Google and Apple calendars, and likely will affect other calendars and scheduling systems.

This has the potential for confusion with business meetings and personal appointments. This may also affect scheduled events for machines and automated systems that are set to operate at a certain time of day. It is important to review calendars and confirm appointments such as flight departure times, medical appointments, work meetings, building automation etc., that occur in the weeks following November 1 to ensure that they remain accurate. The Government of Yukon recommends that Yukoners update their devices and systems as soon as possible.

If a device does not show “UTC-7 Yukon” or “Whitehorse” time automatically after updating, it can be manually set to the new time zone. For specific hardware or software issues, contact the appropriate IT specialist or the manufacturer’s customer support.

Quick facts
  • Yukon’s new regulation on time takes effect on November 1. Yukon is now permanently seven hours behind Coordinated Universal Time (UTC-7).

  • On November 1, 2020, Yukon will be on the same time as Alberta, the NWT and northeastern BC. Yukon will be one hour ahead of the rest of BC.

  • In March 2021, Yukon will be on the same time as all of BC and one hour behind Alberta and the NWT.
