The Government of Yukon will be installing new street lighting between kilometre one and four on the Robert Campbell Highway and will be improving road infrastructure in and around Watson Lake.
In the coming months, new signage and pavement markings will be installed at three crosswalk locations in the community that will provide advance warning to motorists of the upcoming crosswalk. The potential for other crosswalks in high-traffic areas will be considered.
Both of these important upgrades will improve road safety for all users. Portions of this work will be completed in partnership with the Town of Watson Lake.
Liard First Nation is proud to collaborate on a proactive approach to public safety. This initiative demonstrates not only foresight in risk management, but is also a great example of how Yukon and the Town of Watson Lake are working together in collaboration with Liard First Nation to serve our citizens. The Town of Watson Lake is very excited to acknowledge the cooperative endeavour to put streetlights between Km 1 and Km 4 on the Robert Campbell Highway. This has been a priority of Mayor and Council for quite some time, and addresses safety concerns that we have voiced for our citizens that travel that section of highway. The three crosswalks that will be improved are located at Robert Campbell Highway and Ravenhill Drive, Alaska Highway and Eighth Street and along the Alaska Highway in front of Andrea’s Hotel.
Decisions to install streetlights are based on the Yukon Street lighting Guidelines and consider factors such as traffic volume, operational factors, roadway design and collision history.
Installation of the updated roadside crosswalk signage began on January 17, with updates to pavement markings and overhead signage and lighting planned for summer 2022.
