Physical distancing is an effective way to reduce the spread of illness. This means making changes at work to minimize close contact with others.
There are steps you can take to practise physical distancing in your business and keep your staff and clients safe.
Make sure people keep their physical distance
- Create an environment where clients can practice safe physical distancing of 2 metres (6 feet).
- Put lines of tape on the floor 2 metres (6 feet) apart at any location within your business where people may line up or congregate, such as the checkout counter, service desk and displays.
- Avoid providing a place for customers to be able to loiter.
- Post signs that remind people waiting in line to keep a 2-metre (6-foot) distance between each other. We've provided some signs you can use.
- If you have a waiting area, remove chairs to ensure there's space between clients.
- Remove items such as magazines, pens and papers from common areas.
Control the number of people in your business
- Encourage your clients to order online and have the goods delivered, if possible.
- Make goods available for curbside pick-up.
- Consider asking clients to wait outside your office or business.
Avoid physical contact
- Do not shake hands. Greet your clients with a smile or a wave.
- Wash your hands with warm water and soap for at least 20 seconds or use hand sanitizer if water is not available. Do this between serving clients and frequently throughout the day.
- Post a handwashing sign.
- Provide disposable paper towels.
- Make hand sanitizer available for clients and staff.
- Post signs to encourage people to use hand sanitizer or have an employee requesting that customers sanitize their hands when the enter your business.
- Place paper tissues near doorways for people to use to open door handles.
- Provide a trash can next to the door so people can immediately dispose of tissues.
- When you empty the garbage, take care to not touch used tissues with your hands.
- Line the garbage can with a plastic bag to make waste disposal easier and safer.
Protect customers and cashiers
- Install a plexiglass sheets in front of each cashier.
- Consider accepting debit or credit only to minimize contact from exchanging cash.
- Change the position of your cash counter to enable your cashiers to be 2 metres from other cashiers.
- Install floor decals to remind clients to keep the 2-metre physical distancing requirements while they line up to pay.
- Provide gloves for cashiers to wear when possible and remind them not to touch their face. When they remove the gloves the should dispose of them immediately and wash their hands afterwards. Staff should never reuse gloves.
- Put a mark on the floor for customers to stand behind during the transaction with the cashier. Once the transaction is finished the cashier should step back to allow the customer to take their purchase from counter.
- Provide hand sanitizer for staff to use between each customer if staff are not wearing gloves.
- Provide enough pens so staff carry their own and do not share them.
- Implement a cleaning protocol throughout your store. This includes your back store or storage space.
- Regularly sanitize high-use surfaces such as door handles, debit machines, telephones, computer monitors and keyboards.
- Sanitize the handle of grocery carts and baskets between each use.
- When you're disinfecting, spray the cleaner into a paper towel or cloth or use a disinfect wipe to clean surfaces and immediately dispose of the towel, cloth or wipe.

Limit access to communal spaces
- Close access to your staff room or communal kitchen area if you cannot clean the space regularly.
- Ask your employees to use disposable, single use or their own plates, cups and cutlery.
- Consider closing public washrooms if you cannot clean them regularly. Washrooms should be cleaned after every use.
Monitor and protect your health
- If you or any of your staff feel sick – even mildly – stay home.
- Add your logo to the sign we’ve provided and put it on your front door or window asking people not to come in if:
- they’ve travelled outside Yukon, British Columbia, the Northwest Territories or Nunavut in the past 14 days;
- they’re sick; or
- if they’ve been in contact with someone who's suspected of having or confirmed to have COVID-19 in the last 14 days.
