Trades are regulated in the Yukon. You must follow the regulations for your trade while working in the territory. You may be required to provide a Yukon Certificate of Qualification as part of the licensing process.
The Department of Education’s Apprenticeship and Trade Certification unit issues Certificates of Qualification under the Apprenticeship Training Act and the Apprentice Training and Tradesperson’s Qualifications Regulation.
The regulated trades for which you’ll need to be licensed in the Yukon include, but are not limited to:
- electrician (construction and industrial);
- gasfitter;
- oil-burner mechanic;
- power engineer; and
- elevator technician.
Email the Department of Community Services’ Building Safety branch at [email protected] to learn more about regulated trades.
The benefits to being a certified journeyperson include:
- receiving higher pay;
- having more job opportunities;
- can train registered apprentices; and
- can work anywhere in Canada.
There are 2 ways to get your journeyperson Yukon Certificate of Qualification, with or without a Red Seal endorsement. This is also known as a “journeyperson ticket” or “being ticketed”.
You can receive a Certificate of Qualification when you:
- complete the Yukon’s apprenticeship program; or
- apply with enough demonstrated working hours in a designated trade, including self-employment and successfully pass the appropriate exam.
You may be eligible to write or “challenge” the journeyperson Certificate of Qualification exam without completing an apprenticeship if you have enough experience working in the trade.
Application fee
You will need to pay a non-refundable $15 application fee to apply for a Yukon certificate of qualification.
Practical examination fee
If we accept your application, you’ll need to take a practical exam to qualify for the trades of:
- hairstylist; or
- welder.
The practical examination fee is $20 and is non-refundable.
Eligibility
You must have 1.5 times the amount of work hours for the designated trade. You can see how many hours are required for your trade on the trades designated in the Yukon information sheet.
For example, an apprentice plumber is required to complete 6,400 work hours (1,600 x 4 levels) during their apprenticeship program. You will need to have worked as a plumber for at least 9,600 hours (1.5 x 6,400) to be eligible to sit for the exam.
