The Government of Yukon has announced a commitment of $18.75 million toward the Yukon Gathering Place, a new convention centre set to become a major economic and community hub in Whitehorse. The announcement was made on Saturday, March 22, 2025, by Premier and Minister of Economic Development Ranj Pillai, alongside Yukon Member of Parliament Brendan Hanley, Kwanlin Dün First Nation Chief Sean Smith, and Yukon Convention Bureau President Eddie Rideout. The event was attended by partners and industry members who helped move the project forward.
Developed in partnership with the Government of Canada and Chu Níikwän LP – the economic development arm of Kwanlin Dün First Nation –the Yukon Gathering Place will attract conferences, trade shows and events that boost local businesses and tourism across the Yukon. Increased visitor spending is expected to support jobs in hospitality, transportation, and event planning while strengthening Whitehorse’s economy.
Beyond its role as a convention centre, the facility will serve as a space for cultural and community activities, including festivals, meetings and celebrations. This ensures year-round benefits for both residents and visitors.
Designed with sustainability in mind, the Yukon Gathering Place will incorporate energy-efficient infrastructure, use locally sourced materials where possible and implement innovative waste management solutions. These environmentally responsible practices align with the Yukon’s commitment to sustainability.
The Yukon Gathering Place is scheduled to open in 2028. The Government of Yukon remains committed to working with partners and stakeholders to ensure the facility meets the needs of Yukoners for generations to come.
This is a historic moment for Yukoners and Yukon businesses. The new convention centre will drive economic growth, create jobs and position Whitehorse as a top destination for conferences and tourism. This project reflects years of hard work, advocacy and partnership, and it strengthens opportunities for all Yukon communities. This isn’t just about building a convention centre – it’s about creating lasting opportunities and shaping a strong future for all Yukoners.
A new convention centre in Whitehorse is a game-changer for the Yukon and our tourism industry. The new space will expand our ability to host major events, highlight Yukon cultures and attract visitors from around the world. Years of vision and partnership have made this possible, opening doors for local businesses and communities. I look forward to seeing Kwanlin Dün First Nation’s vision for this space come to life!
