Government of Yukon seeks public input on electricity regulation improvements

The Government of Yukon is inviting Yukoners to share their thoughts on the proposed improvements to the Public Utilities Act that will enable more effective and efficient practices for regulating the costs and sale of electricity in the Yukon.

The Public Utilities Act sets out a system to regulate the sale of electricity in the Yukon. The Yukon Utilities Board is an independent administrative organization responsible for making decisions in the public interest that govern how utility companies provide services in the territory and how much they can charge.

To make these decisions, the board holds public hearings to gather evidence from experts, intervenors and applicants to reach a conclusion that serves the interests of Yukoners.

Most of the changes being considered are designed to expand the Yukon Utilities Board’s ability to:

  • adopt more efficient practices;
  • deal with complaints; and
  • consider impacts on the supply of affordable, renewable energy.

Public feedback will help the Government of Yukon to understand how Yukoners may be affected and how to pursue further changes to the Act. Yukoners have until April 18, 2025, to complete the survey.

Electricity is often taken for granted, but it requires the work and dedication of many people to power our homes. The Yukon Utilities Board plays a crucial role in regulating, reviewing and reporting on electricity usage, prices and projects. Our government is working with stakeholders and Yukoners to ensure the board is as efficient and effective as possible and reflects their needs and interests to best serve Yukoners.
