Yukon First Nations Cancer Strategy
The Yukon First Nations Cancer Strategy is a First Nations-led roadmap to improve cancer care for Yukon First Nations people and communities.
The strategy launched on March 20, 2026. Partners on this strategy include Yukon First Nation governments, Council of Yukon First Nations, Yukon Hospital Corporation, Government of Yukon, Elders and cancer survivors. Funding was provided by the Canadian Partnership Against Cancer.
About the strategy
Yukon First Nations identified cancer as a major concern for individuals, families and communities. The strategy responds to these concerns by centering Yukon First Nations' voices, knowledge and lived experience.
This strategy:
- is owned and led by Yukon First Nations;
- supports self-determination,
- fair access to care and cultural safety;
- recognizes the realities of care in the Yukon, including the need to travel outside the territory for treatment; and
- guides health system partners to plan and deliver cancer-related services.
What the strategy focuses on
The strategy focuses on cancer care services offered in the Yukon. It highlights early intervention through awareness, prevention and screening. It also supports patients navigating the cancer care system.
Goals of the strategy
The strategy is guided by 3 goals:
- Supporting Yukon First Nations leadership and self-determination in cancer care
- Improving equitable access to screening and cancer services
- Strengthening cultural safety throughout the health system
Priority areas for action
The strategy identifies 5 priority areas for action:
- Strengthening partnerships between Yukon First Nations and health system partners
- Improving Yukon First Nation data access, shared knowledge and understanding of Yukon First Nation cancer experiences
- Increasing awareness and prevention efforts
- Improving access to culturally safe screening and diagnosis
- Supporting patients and families to better navigate the cancer care system.
What happens next
The launch marks the beginning of the next phase of work. This includes raising awareness, building partnerships and putting the plan into action. Yukon First Nations will guide this work based on the strengths and needs of communities.
Health system partners will keep working with Yukon First Nations to carry out the plan and guide future work.
While the strategy focuses on the needs of Yukon First Nations, many of the actions will benefit anyone receiving cancer care in the Yukon.
