Love your breasts. Book your screening.
The Yukon Mammography Program provides breast screening at Whitehorse General Hospital. If you’re 50 to 74, a screening mammogram every 2 years can help find breast cancer early, before you notice symptoms.

Is screening right for you?
You should get breast cancer screening if:
- If you’re 50 to 74: Most women and people with breasts should have a screening mammogram every 2 years.
- If you’re 40 to 49: You can book your own screening mammogram, but the balance of benefits and risks is less clear for this age group. Talk with your health care provider about what is right for you.
- If you’re 75 or older: Ask your health care provider whether you should continue screening.
- If you have a higher risk of breast cancer: You may need to start screening earlier or be screened more often. Talk with your health care provider if you have a family history of breast cancer, genetic risk factors or other concerns. They can recommend the right schedule and arrange a referral if needed.
You will need a referral from a health care provider if you:
- are under 40;
- are pregnant or breastfeeding;
- have previously had breast cancer; or
- have breast implants.
Do you have a breast concern?
Contact your health care provider as soon as possible.
A screening mammogram will not be sufficient if you have symptoms such as:
- a new lump;
- new or ongoing breast pain;
- nipple discharge;
- changes to the skin or nipple; or
- another new breast concern.
Your provider may refer you for a diagnostic mammogram, an ultrasound or other tests.
A diagnostic mammogram looks more closely at a specific breast concern. It must be ordered by a physician or nurse practitioner and may include additional images or an ultrasound.
Not sure what you need? Call 867-393-8738. We’ll help you find the right next step.
What to expect
Prepare for your mammogram
On the day of your appointment:
- do not use deodorant, body powder or lotion on your breasts or underarms;
- wear a 2-piece outfit so you only need to undress from the waist up;
- bring your Yukon health care card; and
- arrive 15 minutes early.
Mammography services are on the main level of Whitehorse General Hospital. Check in at Medical Imaging reception, across from Admitting and Discharge in the main atrium.
During your mammogram
- Your appointment will take about 30 minutes.
- Expect 4 images – 2 of each breast – under gentle compression.
- Tell your technologist how you’re feeling or if you need a pause.
After your mammogram
- A radiologist will review your images.
- A report will be sent to the health care provider listed on your screening form.
- You will receive your results by mail.
- You will be contacted if you need more tests.
