Reasons for collecting personal information
Unless otherwise noted, we collect your personal information to:
- communicate with you to deliver a service; and
- improve the user experience on our websites and digital services.
Communicating with the Government of Yukon
The main ways people communicate with the government online are by email, submitting a feedback form, commenting on a blog post or registration forms.
When you email the government
We use your email address and any information you include in your email so we can respond to your inquiry. We recommend you not include any PI in your emails. This is not a secure way to share information in general.
If you need to share personal or sensitive information with the government:
- phone the office you need to contact; or
- visit a front counter or office in person.
When you fill out an online user feedback form
If you fill out and submit an online user feedback form, we recommend you do not include PI. Unless stated on the form, this information is not secure. If you want to share feedback on one of our websites or digital services email [email protected]. If we cannot answer your inquiry, we'll point you to the person who can.
PI we collect via user feedback forms and why we collect it
- IP address. We use this to send web pages to the person who asked for them. As a side-effect, it also lets us know the general region of the user.
- Date and time your comment was submitted. This helps us understand when the comment was made so we can tell if the topic a person commented on has already been resolved.
- The page you were on when you completed the form (URL and page title). We use this so we have context so we can pinpoint and address any issues reported.
When you comment on a government blog
We collect the same information on blogs as we do on other government websites. This includes: IP address, date and time of the submission and URL and page title.
If you comment on a blog, we review the comment before we publish it. This ensures the comment follows the blog commenting policy and does not contain any PI. Read the blog commenting policy.
When you use an online form to register
Some Government of Yukon websites ask visitors to register by filling in an online form. We so this so the government can:
- deliver a service; and
- respond to a specific, identified individual.
In these instances the website stores your responses and data from the form so we cab fulfil your service request. These communications become part of the record of the transaction. We design them to meet the government's records management procedures. We manage any PI to meet the requirements of the Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act.
