  1. Learn about the role

    School wellness specialists have an important role in our schools and do the following:

    • provide a wide variety of direct supports and consultation to students, families and school staff;
    • work collaboratively with students, families, Yukon First Nations, community service providers and educators to identify student concerns and to provide supportive services; and
    • assist students, families and schools in managing or resolving personal, emotional, mental, social and behavioural matters that may affect a student’s:
      • overall health;
      • wellbeing; and
      • ability to learn effectively.

     

    The Department of Education works within the 14 Yukon First Nations to ensure Yukon First Nations ways of knowing, doing and being are integrated into all Yukon schools.

  2. Salary

    As of January 1, 2023, school wellness specialists earn a salary of $87,091 to $101,013. As a school wellness specialist, you're a member of the Yukon Employees’ Union (YEU).

  3. Before you apply

    Eligibility

    To be eligible for a school wellness specialist position, you must be legally eligible to work in Canada. To be eligible, you must be a:

    • Canadian citizen; or
    • permanent resident.

    Job requirements

    • Willingness and ability to travel within Yukon
    • Valid class 5 driver’s licence
    • Eligible to be registered as a social worker in a Canadian College of Social Workers

    Prepare your application

    1. Prepare your résumé and show that you meet the essential qualifications:

    • bachelor’s degree in social work or a related field;
    • experience working with children or youth experiencing social and emotional difficulties; and
    • experience providing social work services including:
      • assessments;
      • consultation;
      • case management;
      • psychosocial counselling;
      • crisis intervention; and
      • referrals.

    We consider these as assets:

    • training in critical incident stress response/debriefing or violent threat risk assessment;
    • experience working in rural settings; and
    • fluency in French.

    2. Provide 3 professional references.

    • 1 reference must be a recent and relevant supervisor.
    • Include the names and contact information of your references.

    Security clearance

    Once we hire you, you must complete and submit a vulnerable sector check. Follow these steps.

    1. Visit your local police detachment with 2 pieces of identification.
    2. Follow the instructions the police detachment gives you to complete the process. The fee for a vulnerable sector check can vary. Ask the police detachment about the cost.
    3. Bring the original vulnerable sector check to Department of Education's Human Resources Branch.
      In person: Education Building (entrance to parking is on Hospital Road), 1000 Lewes Boulevard in Whitehorse. We’re open Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.

    Your vulnerable sector check is valid for 2 years from the date the police verify the search. You must keep it current, even if it expires in the middle of a school year.
