Amendments to Corrections Act tabled

Bill No. 6 was tabled in the Legislative Assembly today. It proposes amendments to the Corrections Act that address segregation within Yukon’s corrections system.

The proposed amendments focus on the use of segregation and restrictive confinement and would align correctional services in Yukon with the universally accepted Mandela Rules regarding solitary confinement.

These proposed amendments to the Corrections Act would position Yukon as a leader in segregation reform and align the territory’s corrections with international best practices and minimum standards of care for those in custody. They would also ensure that our correctional system continues to be progressive and takes into account the needs of a diverse inmate population.
