Applications open for special one-time prize available for projects marking the Yukon’s 125th anniversary

Yukoners are invited to mark the Yukon’s 125th anniversary of joining the Confederation of Canada by applying for the new 125 Prize. As Yukoners look ahead to the next 125 years of the territory, three to five exceptional Yukon-based projects will be selected to receive up to $125,000 to achieve something extraordinary.

The intention of the 125 Prize is to support unique, big, bold ideas that will leave a lasting legacy. Eligible projects include physical or recreational achievements, cultural pursuits or challenges that inspire Yukoners across the territory and draw attention to the Yukon from around the world.

Projects must be achievable between December 2023 and December 2024. Successful recipients are expected to share their journey with the rest of the Yukon, and the world, through social media, highlighting the incredible opportunities and perseverance of Yukoners.

The prize has a two-stage application process. A brief Expression of Interest form can be submitted online until August 4. Applicants selected to proceed to the second application stage must provide a full proposal including a detailed budget and a two-minute video explaining their idea.

The successful recipients will be announced at the end of December 2023. A total of $250,00 in funding is available for the successful recipients.

Yukon's 125th anniversary is a significant milestone in our history, and we want to ensure it is celebrated in a truly memorable way. Inspired by the 1967 Yukon Centennial Alpine Expedition and subsequent literary works of mountaineer Monty Alford, the 125 Prize provides a unique opportunity for Yukoners to shape how we honour our territory's rich heritage and create lasting legacies. We are excited to see the creative and innovative ideas that not only showcase the extraordinary spirit and achievements of Yukoners, but also reflect the deep-rooted and diverse history of the Yukon.

Premier Ranj Pillai

The Yukon’s story, which began long before joining the Confederation of Canada, is one of strength, resilience and opportunity. The 125 Prize encourages Yukoners to reflect on the significance of this occasion and find meaningful ways to commemorate this heritage, foster community engagement and inspire future generations. This is your chance to achieve something extraordinary.
