Deadline extended for foreign nationals to request support letters for work permits

The deadline for eligible foreign nationals to request for a letter of support from the Government of Yukon for work permit extensions has been extended to October 31, 2024. This letter of support is a vital step for foreign nationals seeking a work permit under the recently announced agreement between the Government of Yukon and Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.

The Yukon entered into an agreement with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to facilitate the issuance of work permits to prospective applicants of the Yukon Nominee Program (YNP). This new agreement specifically applies to foreign nationals who had valid work authorization as of May 16, 2024 and are currently established in the Yukon. Their employer must plan to nominate them for permanent residency through the YNP in 2025 or 2026.

Program eligibility and the request form for a letter of support are available on Yukon.ca.

Quick facts
  • Foreign nationals living in the Yukon with work permits that have expired since May 16, 2024, or that are set to expire before December 31, 2024, are eligible to apply for a new Yukon-specific work permit. This permit will be valid for up to two years.

  • These work permits will help to support foreign workers settled in the Yukon as they pursue their path to permanent residency, while enabling Yukon businesses to retain staff.
