These draft flood hazard maps mark an important step forward in our climate resilience efforts. By combining local knowledge and scientific data, we are helping provide Dawson and the Klondike Valley with tools to plan responsibly for the future. We encourage everyone to review the maps and share their perspectives. Together, we can build vibrant, thriving communities that are well-prepared and resilient for the future.

Minister of Environment Nils Clarke

Flood risk is not just a planning issue – it’s about the safety and security of our communities. These maps will guide land use, infrastructure investments and emergency preparedness across the Yukon. I urge Dawson and Klondike Valley residents and stakeholders to engage in this process and help build stronger, more resilient communities.

Minister of Community Services Richard Mostyn

Quick facts
  • Flood hazard maps are developed by engineers using the best available data, models and local knowledge. They identify areas at varying levels of flood risk and will support decisions related to land use planning, emergency preparedness, infrastructure development and climate adaptation.

  • Under the government’s Our Clean Future climate strategy, the government is committed to developing flood hazard maps for all 14 communities at risk of flooding by 2027.

  • To date flood hazard maps have been completed for seven communities, which include: Carcross, Tagish, Marsh Lake, Lake Laberge, Carmacks, Teslin and Old Crow.

  • Residents and stakeholders in Dawson and the Klondike Valley can review the maps and submit comments via Dawson/Klondike Valley Draft Flood Maps Survey.

  • The final version of the flood hazard maps will be updated based on the feedback received and will be used to support flood mitigation and adaptation work in the community.
