The Government of Yukon’s ongoing construction of the Whitehorse South Fuel Break, which helps protect residents, homes and critical infrastructure from the impacts of wildfire, has produced a large quantity of firewood. Some of this wood is now available for Yukoners to mitigate their winter heating costs.
Wildland Fire Management will be giving away this firewood on Copper Haul Road in Whitehorse until August 2, from 9 am to 9 pm each day. The site is located about three kilometres up Copper Haul Road after turning right off Mount Sima Road from the Alaska Highway.
The firewood must be removed safely and loaded only by hand.
People wanting to collect wood must sign up online to obtain a free permit at Yukon.ca. Questions should be directed to the Wildland Fire Management forester managing this project at 867-336-0465.
We are pleased with the ongoing progress on the Whitehorse South Fuel Break, which has produced, as a byproduct, a large amount of firewood. The Yukon government realizes some of this firewood can be used to reduce home heating costs, and we are pleased this resource can be passed on directly to Yukoners.
Firewood is a critical component of energy security for many Yukon families. Providing this free firewood is a part of our government’s efforts to ensure Yukoners have a dependable supply of fuel wood, and, in turn, make Yukon homes more resilient to potential power outages.

People with a permit can take up to 11 cords of firewood after giving the site manager a Personal Use Fuelwood Permit number. Free permits are available online at https://personal-use-fuel-wood-permit.service.yukon.ca.

The firewood is green wood already cut to four-foot lengths. The wood cannot be cut further at the pick-up site and must be transported safely.
