The Government of Yukon and Champagne and Aishihik First Nations partner on $1.87M retrofit initiative to reduce carbon emissions and improve energy efficiency

This is a joint news release between the Government of Yukon and Champagne and Aishihik First Nations

The Government of Yukon and Champagne and Aishihik First Nations signed an agreement to support the retrofit of a dozen homes.
The agreement provides $1.87 million for 12 Champagne and Aishihik First Nations homes. The project, led by Champagne and Aishihik First Nations, designed and supported by Earthrise Building Services Inc, will upgrade these homes to include cold climate heat pumps, heat recovery ventilation systems and added insulation to ceilings, along with ENERGY STAR windows, walls and foundations as required. Nine of the 12 homes will retire old oil furnaces. These upgrades will reduce carbon emissions from these homes by 75 per cent and reduce energy consumption by 40 per cent.

This agreement is the first of several with Yukon First Nations for home retrofits, contributing to the Government of Yukon’s goal of completing 2,000 energy efficiency retrofits in residential, commercial and institutional buildings by 2030, as outlined in the Our Clean Future strategy.

This partnership with Champagne and Aishihik First Nations marks an important step toward reducing carbon emissions and improving energy efficiency in our communities. The retrofits will reduce energy consumption by 40 per cent, and help create more sustainable, resilient homes for future generations. This is just the beginning, as we continue to work together with Yukon First Nations to achieve our goal of 2,000 energy-efficient retrofits by 2030. Shäw nithän.

Minister of Energy, Mines and Resources John Streicker

We are pleased to continue our partnership with the Yukon government by signing this agreement, which supports the retrofit of 12 homes in Dakwäkäda/Haines Junction. By working together on innovative solutions, we can work towards addressing climate change. We look forward to more opportunities for partnerships like this in the future.
