In response to earthquakes that struck areas of Türkiye and Syria on February 6, the Government of Yukon is announcing support for people affected by this devastating natural disaster.
The Government of Yukon is donating $25,000 to Yukon Cares to support the resettlement of Turkish and Syrian nationals displaced by these events. Yukon Cares, established in 2015, is a community organization that works to bring refugee families to the Yukon.
A support desk, similar to the Ukrainian family support desk, is currently available to provide help and resources to those impacted by the earthquake. This temporary measure will offer information on immigration and family reunification, connect employers with arriving immigrants and help new Yukoners find employment opportunities.
In addition, the Government of Yukon will prioritize applications under the Yukon Nominee Program from eligible nationals of Türkiye and Syria. This measure will use an existing immigration pathway to support people from the affected regions to find meaningful employment in the Yukon and will complement federal support prioritizing the processing of temporary and permanent residency applications for Turkish and Syrian nationals impacted by the earthquakes.
The hearts and minds of Yukoners are with the people of Türkiye and Syria following the earthquakes that struck in February. Since then, we have worked hard to plan support for survivors. Through the donation to Yukon Cares as well as additional help and resources for those impacted, our government is taking action to support those in need while strengthening the Yukon as a place for everyone to call home.
