The Government of Yukon has implemented a new regulation under the Public Utilities Act that allows the Yukon’s private sector to offer electric vehicle charging services and collect user fees on the electricity sold to the public. Prior to this, only regulated public utilities could sell electricity under the Public Utilities Act.
This change not only encourages the development of more public charging stations but also creates business opportunities for municipalities, First Nations governments and the private sector. With a growing number of Yukoners adopting electric vehicles, there is an increasing demand for convenient and practical charging options across the territory.
The installation of additional publicly accessible electric vehicle chargers plays a crucial role in supporting the transition and electrification of the transportation sector. This initiative facilitates seamless commuting within communities and facilitates easy travel between them.

The Government of Yukon adopted the new Excluded Undertaking (Electric Vehicle Charging Stations) Regulation under the Public Utilities Act per Order in Council #2024-20.
The new regulation excludes businesses, municipalities and First Nations governments and development corporations from the requirements and obligations imposed on a public utility for selling electricity through electric vehicle chargers.
The Government of Yukon’s fast charging network currently remains publicly available for free use.
The Government of Yukon offers Good Energy rebates for the installation of Level 2 electric vehicle chargers at homes and buildings throughout the Yukon.
This initiative fulfills climate action T7 in Our Clean Future.
