Government of Yukon creates opportunity for the Yukon’s private sector to offer electric vehicle charging services

The Government of Yukon has implemented a new regulation under the Public Utilities Act that allows the Yukon’s private sector to offer electric vehicle charging services and collect user fees on the electricity sold to the public. Prior to this, only regulated public utilities could sell electricity under the Public Utilities Act.

This change not only encourages the development of more public charging stations but also creates business opportunities for municipalities, First Nations governments and the private sector. With a growing number of Yukoners adopting electric vehicles, there is an increasing demand for convenient and practical charging options across the territory.

The installation of additional publicly accessible electric vehicle chargers plays a crucial role in supporting the transition and electrification of the transportation sector. This initiative facilitates seamless commuting within communities and facilitates easy travel between them.

Decarbonizing the Yukon’s transportation sector is a Government of Yukon commitment under Our Clean Future: A Yukon strategy for climate change, energy and the green economy.

An increasing number of Yukoners with electric vehicles want convenient, accessible and practical charging options. This new regulation encourages the development of public charging stations and creates business opportunities for municipalities, First Nations and the private sector. As a result, electric vehicle owners will have more options for charging their electric vehicles throughout the Yukon, while we help decarbonize the Yukon’s transportation sector.

Minister of Energy, Mines and Resources John Streicker

Expanding electric vehicle charging services across the territory is not just a convenience, but a crucial step towards realizing our commitment to decarbonize the Yukon's transportation sector. As we implement Our Clean Future strategy, making charging infrastructure more available aligns with our vision for a sustainable, green economy.

Minister of Environment Nils Clarke
