To improve access to fertility and surrogacy treatments for Yukoners, the Government of Yukon is developing a new fertility and surrogacy tax credit, to be administered by the Canada Revenue Agency, subject to legislative approval. This refundable tax credit would be available to all Yukon taxpayers for fertility related expenses, in addition to the recently-announced medical travel coverage for fertility treatments.
The Government of Yukon plans to introduce the necessary amendments to the Income Tax Act (Yukon) during the 2025 spring session of the Yukon Legislative Assembly.
This proposed tax credit is equal to 40 per cent of the cost of fertility treatments, including surrogacy expenses. The value of the refund will be a maximum of $10,000 per year with unlimited lifetime availability. This tax credit will help cover part of the cost of these treatments.
The Government of Yukon aims to make this proposed tax credit first available to be applied on an individual’s 2025 tax return for expenses incurred during the 2024 and 2025 calendar year, should this legislation pass.
By developing this refundable tax credit, our government is taking another important step in helping Yukon families who are planning to access fertility and surrogacy treatments. By reducing the financial pressures of these treatments, we are committed to helping more Yukoners pursue their dreams of parenthood.
Our government is committed to supporting Yukoners as they pursue their family planning goals. Along with the medical travel coverage for fertility and surrogacy treatments, this tax credit can really help many Yukoners on their fertility journey. I hope the opposition supports this important legislation in the Spring to help Yukon families.
I am so glad that Yukoners will finally have access to financial support for fertility treatment. I know how much this means to so many Yukoners who have been unwavering in their advocacy for this support - I am so grateful for your efforts. I hope this will be just the start of ensuring supports for fertility treatment for Yukoners.
