Government of Yukon expands Peak Smart incentives to reduce winter electricity demand

This is a joint news release between the Government of Yukon and Yukon Energy.

The Government of Yukon and Yukon Energy are making it easier for Yukoners to save money and help reduce pressure on the territory’s electricity grid during the coldest and darkest days of winter.

New and enhanced incentives for those who participate in Yukon Energy’s Peak Smart Home Program will cover 100 per cent of the cost to purchase and install the required smart thermostats and hot water tank controllers, up to $750 per device type.

Participants will also receive a $50 sign-up incentive for each type of device enrolled. For example, a household that enrolls their smart thermostats and hot water tank controller will receive a $100 sign-up incentive. Each following year, participants will receive an additional $50 per enrolled device type.

This means eligible households can receive up to $1,600 when they join the program, plus an extra $100 annually for continued participation.

These new incentives are the latest initiative under the Government of Yukon’s Dependable Grid Program, launched this spring to reduce peak winter electricity demand, improve affordability and strengthen the reliability of the Yukon’s electricity system.

The Peak Smart Home program helps reduce electricity demand when the grid is under the most pressure, particularly during extreme cold.

Expanding Peak Smart is one of the practical steps the Government of Yukon is taking now while it develops the Winter Reliable Energy Plan. The plan will identify the investments, programs and policies needed to increase electricity supply, better manage demand and provide Yukoners with reliable and affordable power over the long term.

Together, these initiatives will help reduce pressure on the electricity grid today while supporting the work needed to meet the Yukon's growing energy needs.

Yukoners know our electricity grid is under pressure, especially during extreme cold. We need to increase reliable power supply, but we also need to make better use of the electricity we already have. That is why we launched the Dependable Grid Program this spring, and these new Peak Smart Incentives are another practical step forward.

We are covering the full eligible cost of these devices and providing ongoing incentives because reduced peak demand benefits everyone. Every home that participates helps take pressure off the grid when it matters most.

Peak Smart is an important program that helps manage pressure on our power system during periods of high demand, especially on cold winter days. When smart devices help Yukoners shift their electricity use away from peak demand, we can make a meaningful impact. I hope the enhanced rebates and new bonuses will encourage even more Yukoners to join the program and be part of the solution.

Quick facts
  • The Peak Smart program is delivered by Yukon Energy with support from the Government of Yukon. The Peak Smart Home program reliably reduces winter peak electricity demand by more than 200 kilowatts at current participation levels.

  • In winter 2025–26, 2,143 devices were enrolled in the Peak Smart Home program, more than double the 813 devices enrolled in winter 2024–25.

  • During Peak Smart events, each participating home reduces electricity demand by about 1 kilowatts on average.

  • A Peak Smart event is a short, scheduled period when Yukon Energy helps participating smart devices use a little less electricity so the power system can continue operating reliably during periods of high demand.

  • Households with eligible smart thermostats or hot water tank controllers already installed can still qualify for the sign-up and annual incentives by enrolling in the program.

  • Households already enrolled in the Peak Smart program are eligible for the new incentives and may be eligible for a portion of costs of purchase and installation of eligible smart thermostats or hot water tank controllers not covered by the previous rebate.
