In keeping with its commitment to modernize regulations and legislation to meet the needs of Yukoners, the Government of Yukon is seeking public input to develop regulations under the new Animal Protection and Control Act.
The Animal Protection and Control Act will align the Yukon with other jurisdictions across the country and increase safety for Yukoners and animals. Regulations will provide the details required to implement and enforce this new legislation.
Yukoners are encouraged to participate in the public engagement and share their thoughts about which animals should be allowed as exotic pets, animal cosmetic surgeries, and standards of care for dogs and livestock in the Yukon.

As part of the new Animal Protection and Control Act, we are developing regulations to strengthen health and welfare standards for livestock in the territory. A key part of this is engaging Yukon farmers and producers to ensure the new regulations are compatible with the Yukon’s agriculture industry.

The Animal Protection and Control Act was passed in the fall 2022 sitting of the Legislative Assembly and will come into effect when the regulations are complete.
The Act will replace old legislation, including the Dog Act, the Animal Protection Act and the Pounds Act.
The Department of Environment developed the Animal Protection and Control Act jointly with the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources who will play a role in the implementation and enforcement of the Act.
