Last week, a delegation of representatives from the Government of Yukon and Tech Yukon joined 11 local tech startups at Web Summit Vancouver to support their efforts in connecting with industry leaders from around the world.
The Department of Economic Development’s funding agreement with Tech Yukon helped support these 11 startups participate in the international conference by covering registration costs and offering a travel grant to offset a portion of travel expenses. Through their attendance, these businesses had the opportunity to connect with potential investors, build networks with industry partners and learn from outside experts.
The startups were selected by Tech Yukon based on core criteria identified by Web Summit hosts. Of the 11 businesses that attended the event, nine have been accepted into Web Summit’s ALPHA program (for early-stage startups) and two have been accepted into the BETA program (for more mature startups).
Over four days, the 11 Yukon businesses attended networking events, classes, seminars and discussion panels. They participated in Vancouver Demo Day, a private event that spotlights standout tech companies showing exceptional momentum. One of the Yukon’s startups, PeerSupport.io, had the opportunity to pitch their product to the audience at this event. Each business also had a one-day booth in the exhibition hall.
Web Summit Vancouver is a new event, replacing the Collision conference in Toronto. The Government of Yukon attended Collision in previous years and continues to support the Yukon’s tech startup community by attending this successor event. Participation in international conferences such as Web Summit serves to promote the Yukon as an exciting place to do business and attract international attention and investment to the territory, consistent with the objectives identified in the Innovation Yukon strategy.
We are pleased to be able to support our local tech startups and entrepreneurs as they develop their ideas and launch them to the world. These 11 businesses represent the diversity, ingenuity and innovative spirit of the Yukon’s technology sector. Web Summit is an opportunity for them to not only learn from outside experts but also promote the Yukon as an excellent place to do business.
We’re proud to showcase the innovation of Yukon’s tech sector at this year’s Web Summit in Vancouver. Bringing 11 local businesses to Vancouver not only highlights the North’s growing impact in technology but also provides opportunities for new partnerships, investment and visibility. Tech Yukon is thrilled to lead this delegation in partnership with the Yukon government and we’re excited for the opportunity to promote the Yukon as an emerging hub for business development.
