The Government of Yukon provides $808,000 in inflation relief to recipients of the Yukon Seniors Income Supplement

As part of the Yukon government’s ongoing commitment to support low-income households, this fiscal year, recipients of the Yukon Seniors Income Supplement (YSIS) will receive a monthly inflation relief payment, which will amount to 39 per cent of their YSIS payment. The increase will provide financial relief to support seniors to address the costs associated with higher inflation and higher interest rates. This is supported by an additional $808,000 that the Yukon government is allocating to YSIS recipients, which will be paid monthly from April 2023 to March 2024, to reduce inflation-related financial pressures.

In keeping with commitments made in the Aging in Place Action Plan, the Department of Health and Social Services is preparing a more in-depth review of income supports for seniors to ensure they have funding that helps meet their needs.

Rising inflation rates have continued to increase financial pressures on many Yukoners, especially fixed-income households. By providing temporary inflation relief to YSIS recipients, our government is taking steps to fulfil commitments made in the Aging in Place Action Plan to and support seniors and Elders through these challenging times.

Minister of Health and Social Services Tracy-Anne McPhee

Quick facts
  • Every fall, YSIS payments are adjusted for inflation as per the Consumer Price Index (CPI).

  • Following the October 2022 CPI adjustment of 5.7 per cent, the maximum monthly payment for YSIS recipients is $288.61.

  • A Yukoner is eligible for the Yukon Senior Income Supplement if they make their home in the Yukon, ordinarily are present in the Yukon and receive income supplement or spouse’s allowance from the Government of Canada under the Old Age Security Act (OAS).

  • Yukoners do not need to apply for YSIS; the Department of Health and Social Services receives information from the Government of Canada on eligible Yukoners.
