The Government of Yukon is encouraging First Nations, businesses and other proponents to share information on potential electricity generation and storage projects through the new Power Potential Portal.
The online portal is designed to help the government identify potential new sources of dependable electricity, better understand opportunities for future development and support long-term planning for the Yukon’s electricity system. The government recognizes that First Nations, businesses and other proponents may have projects that could contribute to the territory's future electricity supply and wants to better understand these opportunities as it plans for future energy needs.
Periods of extreme winter cold and darkness place significant pressure on the Yukon’s electricity grid. As electricity demand continues to grow, identifying new sources of dependable winter power is an important part of the government’s work to improve grid reliability and ensure the territory can meet current and future energy needs.
Proponents are encouraged to submit information about dependable power projects of all sizes and at any stage of development, including early concepts and projects undergoing feasibility assessment. The government is primarily interested in:
- electricity generation projects that can provide dependable winter power, with a preference for projects capable of delivering more than five megawatts; and
- energy storage projects that can improve winter reliability and support grid stability.
Information collected through the portal will help the government better understand the range of potential projects across the territory, identify opportunities for future partnerships and inform ongoing energy system planning, including the Winter Reliable Energy Plan.
The portal is an early planning step and does not constitute a formal call for power or commitment to purchase electricity. Information gathered may help inform the development of future electricity procurement opportunities.
This initiative complements the Yukon Energy Corporation’s ongoing work to advance the Whitehorse Power Centres and the revitalization of the Mayo Generating Station, alongside other efforts to strengthen the territory’s electricity supply.
Yukoners need an electricity system they can count on, especially during the coldest and darkest days of winter when demand is at its highest. Meeting that challenge means looking at every opportunity to bring new, dependable power online. We know there are First Nations, businesses and other proponents with ideas and potential projects that could help strengthen our electricity system. This initiative gives them a way to bring those opportunities forward so we can better understand what is possible, build partnerships and plan for the investments Yukon will need in the years ahead.
