Hidden Valley Elementary School Independent Review Report action plan released

At the request of the Yukon’s Ombudsman, the implementation action plan has been updated to reflect that the Ombudsman’s report is expected to be complete in mid-2022.

The Government of Yukon is implementing the recommendations from the Hidden Valley Elementary School Independent Review Report.

An action plan has been developed by a Deputy Ministers committee that will oversee implementation of the Independent Review Report recommendations. It provides tangible next steps for the Yukon government to improve the coordination of government department responses, address gaps in internal policies and enhance oversight mechanisms. This action plan has been shared with Hidden Valley Elementary School families and is now being made available to the public.

The action plan is based on the guiding principles of creating safe and caring school environments, prevention, transparency and timely communication, accountability, a victim-centred approaches, collaboration and reconciliation. Many of the actions in the plan are aimed at developing or improving guidance, policies and agreements that clarify duties, roles and responsibilities while enhancing opportunities for formal and informal dialogue and coordination on serious incidents across departments and key agencies.

We recognize that there were serious gaps in the inter-agency response to the 2019 incident at Hidden Valley Elementary School. We are committed to fully implementing the recommendations from the Independent Review Report and improving government-wide policies and procedures. This action plan identifies clear timelines for implementation, including a clear and comprehensive policy for responding to serious incidents at Yukon schools.
