Holiday statement from the Yukon’s Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Ranade

"Happy holidays to one and all. As the festive season brings us together and respiratory illnesses are circulating in the territory, it is important to practise everything we have learned to reduce the spread of viruses and illnesses.

“Here are my four top tips to help stop the spread:

  1. Keep up to date on your vaccines.
  2. Cover your cough.
  3. Wash your hands.
  4. Stay home if you are sick.

“To protect your children, loved ones and yourself from severe respiratory illnesses, it’s a good idea to be up to date on your vaccines. In Whitehorse, you can make free appointments at yukon.ca/appointments or get vaccinated at a local pharmacy. Outside of Whitehorse, please call your local health centre to book an appointment or learn about upcoming clinics.

“The holidays mean a rise in joyous social gatherings where respiratory illnesses may spread through close contact with your friends and family. Socializing with your loved ones gives you both physical and mental health benefits, so I encourage Yukoners to balance their own needs and risks when deciding to host or attend a social gathering.

“Please do stay home if you are sick. Wash your hands often, consider gathering in smaller groups and please wear a mask if you feel unwell and need to leave your home for essential items like groceries and medication.

“If you plan to gather with people who are elderly or vulnerable, please postpone your visit if you feel unwell and respect their comfort level around socializing.

“I want to wish everyone a happy and safe holiday. I hope you are all able to connect with your loved ones, whether in person or virtually.”
