The Government of Yukon is reviewing the Yukon Development Corporation’s (YDC) role and responsibilities to support the Yukon’s growing economy and better serve Yukoners.
YDC was founded to promote the Yukon’s sustainable economic development. Through this review, the Government of Yukon will explore how a renewed mandate can position YDC as a modern development corporation that attracts investment, supports strategic projects and advances the Yukon’s economic priorities while responding to emerging opportunities.
Since 1993, the corporation’s primary operational focus has been restricted to ensuring the reliable supply of electricity through its relationship with the Yukon Energy Corporation. This has limited YDC’s ability to fully realize its broader potential in advancing economic development, including advancing strategic investment and long-term economic diversification.
The review will also examine governance and organizational arrangements, including the relationship between YDC and the Yukon Energy Corporation. The goal is to strengthen governance and coordination to support the delivery of affordable and reliable electricity, with energy policy and planning coordinated through the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources. As pressures on the Yukon's energy system increase, the government is focused on ensuring the territory's structure can deliver affordable and reliable electricity.
The review will be led collaboratively by the Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Culture and the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources. This review will include engagement with Yukon First Nations governments, Yukon First Nation development corporations and other key partners throughout the process.
The Yukon has tremendous economic potential, and we are committed to creating the conditions for businesses, entrepreneurs and communities to succeed. This review is an opportunity to ensure the Yukon Development Corporation has the tools and flexibility to support the territory’s changing economy, encourage investment and help build long-term prosperity for Yukoners.
A strong economy depends on reliable energy infrastructure and dependable power. By taking a fresh look at the way we do energy planning and policy in the territory, we can better position the territory to meet future challenges and support our continued growth.
As the needs of Yukoners evolve, YDC is ready to embrace new challenges. We look forward to supporting the Government of Yukon in this important mandate review in order to best advance the Yukon’s economic growth and diversification today and into the future.
