The Department of Education is establishing an advisory committee to strengthen educational programming and student experiences at the Wood Street Centre.
The committee will provide advice to Wood Street Centre staff and the Department of Education on areas such as educational programming, student experiences, experiential learning opportunities, cultural learning and future planning for the Wood Street Centre.
The Wood Street Centre provides Yukon secondary students with specialized, experiential semestered learning programs. Part of what makes these programs unique is students do not have to transfer out of their original secondary school to participate or live in a specific attendance area to qualify or apply for a program.
This flexibility differentiates Wood Street Centre as an educational centre instead of a traditional school, as defined in the Education Act. The Wood Street Centre does not have its own school council. Instead, the Wood Street Centre Advisory Committee will create a formal way for parents, guardians, students, Yukon First Nations and community partners to share input.
The advisory committee membership will be made up of representatives connected to educational programming at the Wood Street Centre, including:
- parents and guardians;
- Wood Street Centre students;
- Yukon First Nations representatives;
- a French language representative;
- a community partner representative; and
- education staff.
The committee’s work will begin in November 2026.
Expressions of interest to participate as a committee member are due by Friday, October 30, 2026. People can contact superintendent Tanya Lewis at [email protected] for more information.
The Wood Street Centre offers unique experiential learning opportunities for Yukon secondary students. The establishment of the Wood Street Centre Advisory Committee will create a formal way for students, families, Yukon First Nations and community partners to share their perspectives and help inform the future direction of the centre. Their advice and recommendations will support the continued growth and success of Wood Street Centre's programs.
-
As per the Education Act, Yukon school councils do not include member seats for students. However, the new Wood Street Centre Advisory Committee does include student participation.
-
The Terms of Reference will be finalized once the committee is established in November.
