This past week, a delegation of Government of Yukon officials attended the annual Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) convention, to promote responsible mineral exploration and development in the Yukon and across the North. The convention took place in Toronto from March 2 to 5, 2025.
Energy, Mines and Resources Minister John Streicker had many productive discussions with industry representatives about the Yukon’s advantages as a mining jurisdiction. Representatives from the Mineral Resources Branch, the Yukon Geological Survey and Economic Development’s Innovation, Industry and Business Development Branch were on hand at the Government of Yukon booth to help answer questions from attendees.
At a reception on opening day, the governments of the Yukon, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut, in partnership with the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor), announced a three-year, pan-territorial marketing strategy aimed at raising awareness of investment opportunities in Canada’s northern mining sector. CanNor will contribute a total of $420,000 over three years and the territorial governments will contribute $70,000 each.
This initiative – Invest North of 60 – will help to develop capacity within the three territorial governments to execute trade and marketing initiatives that stimulate industry interest in the resource potential of Canada’s North. This partnership serves to foster economic resiliency in a time when Canada is navigating through a changing landscape of international trade and relationships.
The Yukon’s mining and mineral exploration industries are rich with potential, and the Government of Yukon is committed to attracting responsible investment that drives growth and benefits Yukoners. We appreciate the Government of Canada’s support in promoting investment and strengthening the North’s mining sector. Now, more than ever, investing in the North’s critical minerals sector is essential. This investment will enhance the Yukon’s global visibility and accelerate the development of critical minerals, securing a stronger, more sustainable future for the North and Canada.
I had many good conversations with industry representatives at PDAC about our work to support the Yukon’s mining industry. There is growing interest in the territory’s critical minerals, which could allow us to play a meaningful role in supporting the transition to a clean energy future and position us well in trade relations. Doing so will provide many well-paying jobs to Yukoners while we ensure that mining is done responsibly to protect our environment and benefit Yukoners.
