Outbreak at Whitehorse General Hospital declared

The Yukon’s acting Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Catherine Elliott has declared an outbreak of COVID-19 at Whitehorse General Hospital.

The outbreak was determined following the identification of several linked COVID-19 cases among staff. No transmission from staff to patients has been identified at this time. COVID-19 is widespread in the Yukon so having cases in a public place such as a hospital can be expected.

Routine outbreak management procedures are in place to keep staff, physicians, patients and the community safe. Yukon Communicable Disease Control (YCDC) is working closely with the Yukon Hospitals to contain the outbreak and ensure infection prevention and control practices are followed.

Hospitals remain safe places to seek care and Yukoners are encouraged to visit the hospital if they need emergency care or call 911.

We are working closely with the staff and leadership at Yukon Hospitals to manage the outbreak. Thank you to everyone who has shown diligence to contain the spread. I’d like to remind Yukoners that masks are required for staff and patients in hospitals. Hospitals remain a safe place to seek medical care.
