Public engagement begins on expanding active transportation options along the Alaska Highway in Whitehorse

The Government of Yukon is inviting members of the public to help design a continuous, multi-use trail plan along the Alaska Highway in Whitehorse.

This project aims to expand active transportation options, creating a safe and accessible route for walking, biking, wheelchair use, skiing, sledding or kicksledding.

Yukoners are encouraged to complete a short online survey before January 5, 2025. The survey will collect insights on trail usage, preferences and ideas to help design a continuous multi-use trail that will be over 30 kilometres long along the Alaska Highway from the Carcross Cutoff to the North Klondike Highway junction. The survey takes five to 10 minutes to complete and the feedback will directly influence the trail’s design, ensuring it is a valuable transportation option for everyone.

The Alaska Highway is a major transportation corridor that supports local travel in Whitehorse and is the principal route connecting northwestern Canada and Alaska for residents and visitors alike. Development of this plan is a step toward creating a connected, multi-use corridor that offers a safe and comfortable travel alternative along this important highway.

The public survey is available at Yukon.ca/whitehorse-highway-trail-plan.

Creating a multi-use trail plan for the Alaska Highway is an important step towards making active transportation safer, more accessible and more enjoyable for everyone. This project is about connecting our communities, reducing environmental impact and supporting healthier lifestyles. I would like thank all Yukoners for participating in the survey and helping us shape this trail to reflect the needs of our community. By working together, we are creating a future where residents and visitors can explore our beautiful surroundings sustainably and safely.
