Minister of Health and Social Services Tracy-Anne McPhee has issued the following statement:
“December 3 is International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD). This day, held each year, promotes the rights and wellbeing of persons with disabilities in all aspects of society and raises awareness of their experiences in political, social, economic and cultural life.
“The year’s theme, Amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future, emphasizes the powerful role of individuals with disabilities as leaders and change makers. It underscores the crucial role of persons with disabilities in shaping a future that is inclusive, accessible and sustainable for everyone, as well as the importance of their involvement in decision-making processes that impact their lives.
“Our government provides many services to support persons with disabilities, including Disability Services, Yukon Home Care, Long-Term Care, Mental Wellness and Substance Use Services (Department of Health and Social Services) and Student Support Services (Department of Education). We are committed to expanding these supports in alignment with recommendations in the Putting People First report, our Quality and Learning framework, the Education Act and best practices.
“In particular, I would like to highlight the important work of the Department of Health and Social Services’ Disability Services Unit. As of November 1, 2024, Disability Services provides services to our growing Yukon population including 287 children and 138 adults. To improve services, the Unit engaged stakeholders, caregivers and adults with lived experience and conducted a survey for caregivers of children with disabilities.
“Thank you to all Yukoners who work to break down barriers and create a more inclusive, equitable future for everyone.”
